The ground color is jet black, and the markings are rich rust and clear white. The Bernese Mountain Dog has a double coat, with a longer outer coat and a wooly undercoat. Berners shed a fair amount, even more so during shedding season, which occurs twice a year. They are considered a large dog breed with a height ranging of 25-27.5 inches for the males, and 23-26 inches for the females. Their average weight is 80-115 pounds for the males, and 70-95 pounds for the females. Their life expectancy is 7-10 years.
